Gulf War Syndrome
After the Persian Gulf War (Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm), many servicemembers reported experiencing a variety ailments that came to be known as Gulf War Syndrome, which is an umbrella term for health problems thought to be brought on as a result of service during the war. While no cause has been officially determined, anthrax vaccine, smoke from oil well fires, pesticides and depleted uranium are potential causes of Gulf War Syndrome.

- Fatigue
- Skin disorders
- Muscle or joint pain
- Headaches and sleep disturbances
- Neurologic, neuropsychological, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular symptoms
- Symptoms involving the respiratory system
- Birth defects
- Various brain cancers
- Lou Gehrig's disease
- Menstrual disorders
- Fibromyalgia

Abnormal weight loss
The VA offers two disability programs that help veterans experiencing health problems and disabilities from their time in service. The programs include compensation and pension payments, copayment waivers for low-income veterans and free or low-cost health care at VA facilities.
