Radiation Exposure

The VA estimates that about 400,000 servicemembers were exposed to atomic radiation between 1945 and 1962, including during the occupation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki between Sept. 11, 1945, and July 1, 1946. The radiation has been linked to a higher rate of cancer in those who were exposed.

Veterans who think they are suffering from ailments related to radiation exposure during their time in service are eligible for free comprehensive examinations and testing to diagnose possible radiation-related symptoms. The VA will provide treatment and possible disability compensation for the following ailments if they are determined to be service related:

  • Lymphomas other than Hodgkins disease
  • All forms of leukemia
  • Breast, pharynx, primary liver, urinary tract, esophageal, small intestinal, pancreatic, gall bladder, stomach and salivary gland cancers, as well as multiple myeloma.
