Dependency and Indemnity Compensation
Eligibility
Surviving spouses who meet one of the following conditions are eligible:

Validly married the Veteran before Jan. 1, 1957.

Married to a servicemember who died on active duty.

Married a Veteran within 15 years of the servicemeber’s discharge from the military, and the Veteran died from a disease incurred during enlistment.

Married to a Veteran for at least one year.

Had a child with the Veteran AND lived with the Veteran until the Veteran’s death AND have not remarried.

To apply for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, fill out VA Form 21-534 and submit it to your local VA regional office.
