TRICARE Plus

TRICARE Plus is a new military treatment facility (MTF) access plan available to those who are eligible for TRICARE benefits, and who are not enrolled in Medicare, TRICARE Prime or another HMO. The program runs on a space-available basis.

Highlights

• TRICARE Plus beneficiaries use a military treatment facility physician as their primary care manager (PCM) and receive the same access and benefits as TRICARE Prime beneficiaries. 

• TRICARE Plus beneficiaries get the same priority access to primary care manager appointments as TRICARE Prime beneficiaries.

• There is no fee to enroll in TRICARE Plus.

Drawbacks

• TRICARE Plus services are not universal. You will not be able to seek treatment at all military treatment facilities. You are also not guaranteed specialty care.

• TRICARE Plus is designed to give you access to military treatment facilities and the program prefers that beneficiaries not use providers outside of military treatment facilities.

• You will not be covered for any care at a civilian facility, but you may be entitled to some cost-sharing, which are determined by the TRICARE Standard and TRICARE Extra rules regarding care outside of network. 

• If you are enrolled in another HMO (e.g. Medicare Choice or an employer-sponsored health care plan) or TRICARE Prime, you are not eligible for TRICARE Plus.

• You can be dis-enrolled in TRICARE Plus if your local military treatment facility decides not to no longer offer TRICARE Plus.

You are eligible for TRICARE Plus if you are eligible for TRICARE benefits.
