Groundhog Day Six and a Half Days a Week
One of the bigger adjustments I had to make once arriving in Iraq was working seven days a week. I’m not used to the whole weekend thing as all my extra time at work was early mornings and late nights. Saturday and Sunday were always my day unless I had barracks duty or the very rare occasion of going into the office. Iraq is a different story.
Saturdays are like any other day spent behind this desk, and Sundays are only shortened because of church. Chaps gave all of us a big laugh during a session of Holy Smokes when he equated our weeks like the movie Groundhog day.
“You know, the week here is like Groundhog Day. Remember how Bill Murray woke up to relive the same day over and over again? Well, we do that everyday, too, just not on Sundays. Monday starts at noon on Sunday.”
Chaplain’s story couldn’t be any more true. Everyday seems just like the one before with a few surprises thrown in here and there. Those surprises can be good or bad, it really depends. The routine is comforting in ways, and maddening in others. However, that routine will get broken in just a few months as we start our redeployment back to the states. The light at the end of the tunnel has change from a little match to a good burning candle. We’ll be outta here before any of use realize it.

You can certainly see your enthusiasm in the paintings you write. The world hopes for even more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to say how they believe. At all times follow your heart.
