10 Reasons to Hire Military Servicemembers and Veterans
Many companies recognize the importance of having a highly qualified and diverse pool of talent to recruit from, and the military provides such a pool. Generally, military servicemembers are dedicated and disciplined people who know the value of following procedures and accepting responsibility. Military employees learn valuable skills and technical knowledge through their service. They can motivate themselves, work well in teams, excel while under pressure or stress and overcome adversity. Servicemembers have integrity and a strong work ethic and come from all walks of life. Companies can save money by hiring those with military experience because these qualities make them more likely to be long-term employees.
Military experience provides employees with a unique combination of valuable work experiences, including the following:
1. Skills–military servicemembers and veterans can enter a company’s workforce with identifiable and transferable skills that are proven in real-world situations, which can enhance an organization’s productivity.
2. Teamwork–almost all military activity is performed with the assistance, coordination and awareness of other persons or other units. Many military personnel have served as team leaders, requiring them to analyze distressful situations, make decisions, give directions, implement plans and accept responsibility for the results.
3. Leadership–the military trains its members to lead by example. They’ve learned practical ways to manage different behaviors to achieve positive results. They also know the dynamics of leadership of both hierarchical and peer structures.
4. Self-discipline–many servicemembers and veterans understand difficult and often complex issues and solve these issues or problems on the spot without step-by-step guidance from above.
5. Accelerated learning curve–military servicemembers and veterans have acquired an ability to learn new skills in a brief amount of time.
6. Performance under pressure–while in the military, servicemembers are expected to do their job right the first time, and do it in a timely manner. Business owners appreciate this type of efficiency.
7. Technology and globalization–veterans are usually aware of international and technical trends that are pertinent to businesses. As employees they can bring both global outlook and technological savvy, encouraging all sorts of enterprises to succeed.
8. Adaptability–individuals in the service have been trained to be flexible and adaptable to meet the ever-changing needs of any situation or mission, and last minute changes are common in any military or civilian working environment. Former servicemembers are also able to adapt quickly to physical and safety demands.
9. Security–a military clearance demonstrates that an individual is recognized as a trustworthy person. With an honorable discharge, service members are certified drug free, which offers another advantage to businesses.
10. Patriotism–as a known employer of military servicemembers and veterans customers will respect a company’s American pride and business ethics.
