Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

The Army has said that it will be doing away with the Green Service Dress Uniform, the White Dress Uniform and the current Dress Blues.

The new uniform will look similar to the old dress blues, but will have a differrent cut and material. The new uniform will be a blue jacket, gray shirt and blue pants.

I think that changing uniforms needs to come about only once in a blue moon. It is very bad timing to be talking about changing the Class A uniform, when they are doing away with the BDUs in favor of the ACUs.

As someone who will has to pay for his own uniforms each time a change is made, it is just money out of my pocket I could use for other things.

Dress blues & tennis shoes. I spent a lot of $$ for blues and wore them twice.

I think the wear out date for the greens was set to somewhere around 2013, I really would'nt lose any sleep about it. Get on the Honour Guard for funeral detail, dress blues are one of the "perks" after a certain number of ceramonies.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

I prefer the greens.  The only complaint I ever heard about the greens was the green shirt.  In Class Bs, it makes you look like an elevator operator.  The new blues will make us look like state troopers.  The new blues are also taking away the unit patches, DUIs, and qualification tabs.  The Army has much more important things to waste time and money on during a war than to change dress uniforms that most soldiers rarely wear.

I like the green shirt. It looks a lot better than the grey shirt they are going to. No matter what color of shirt that is used, you can find some group wearing a similar shirt that is not well thought of.

Funny thing is that they don't ask what we prefer, its been directed. Change is a constant get used to it or get out of the way.

What are the exact changes being made to the Dress Blues for officers? I know they will change the white shirt; is that it or will SSI's be worn also? And what about DUI's: will they not be worn on the Dress Blues by officers or will they find a place for them like the RDI's?

It is called clothing allowance. I am a teacher in my civilian job and I do not get my clothes paid for. I have never had pity on soldiers who whine about uniforms. Free housing as well as other subsidies more than make up for it.

The new uniform will be the everyday uniform wear Class As and Class Bs are now worn. I hear the pants will be different in cut and thickness in order to make them more durable for everyday wear. The shirt will be gray replacing the green shirt of the Class A and Class B uniforms. NCOs and officers will wear the saucer cap. I have not heard about things to be worn on the uniform.

That's my real question. Will Distinctive Unit Insignias be done away with? They are not worn on the Dress Blues by officers. Will nonsubdued SSI's and tabs be done away with? They are not worn on Dress Blues.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

I guess that I am more out of the loop than I thought as I had not heard of scrapping the "greens" which I liked, but then I read the dress blues as well...did someone forget the historical significants of that uniform? I feel that if the Army issues a new uniorm regulation the soldiers should be issued this new design as an addendum to their initial issue...not matter their rank or time in service. I did receive a clothing allowance once a year and it wouldn't pay for my boots much less the uniforms I maintained.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

My understanding is that all SSIs, DUIs, and sew on tabs will not be worn on the new blue uniform.  The regimental affiliation will still be worn over the pocket and the metal tabs will still be used.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

Well, privates and specialists I believe will still wear the beret, so unless they adopt the RDI or their rank on it, they will still wear the DUI. And the DUI will be worn on their shoulder boards I believe. I guess only officers will do away with them. Not sure though.

As for tabs, I guess the Army will finally have to authorize the metallic President's Hundred Tab. This is the only metallic tab never approved by the Army for wear on the uniform. Either that or the President's Hundred tab will go the way of the dodo as far as dress uniforms are concerned. Shame.

Soldiers will have to be careful choosing their badges as well, since (from my memory at least) only five are authorized. So with tabs now being metallic only, this will hog two or so of their badge spots.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

"GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS!" Actually the old IKE jacket in olive-drab was the best and it was last worn on 31 December 1959 after they introduced the AG44 Green service uniform in 1958. Brown shoes and boots and summer khaki cotten uniforms with khaki overseas cap with branch colour piping. American Legion members wore a blue uniform like the newly presecibe one. You used to see American Legionnaires wearing their blue uniform and later just the overseas cap with their medals suspended from them or their service ribbons. Dress Blues are fine for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and for officers going to parties at embassies, but not for every day wear. Besides, most soldiers wear their new field uniforms!

I can,t say on blue or green as I haven,t seen the blue.
I think the ACU with all of its velgro is sloppy compared to the BDU
The ACU to me does away with the sharpness we used to desplay (PRIDE) in the way we look.

Hear Hear!  As it is a uniform, GI's should NOT have to pay for them themselves. Just another way for the Pentagon to go political and try to please someone in the elected government who has a brother-in-law selling uniforms.

Well, I disagree there. Soldiers are paid each month a uniform allowance. Take civilians, in contrast. Civilian employees, most at least, do not get paid a clothing allowance or get suits or clothes issued to them. Why is the military any different? I used to work for Uncle Sam as a civilian and I had to buy my clothes.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

The change was unnecessary. In recent times the Army has always had the Dress Whites, Blues, and Greens. The standard uniform for Class A's was the Dress Greens. This could have easily been changed to the Blues without officially eliminating the other uniforms. Much more is worn on the Greens and I prefer that. Could we still make the change? Of course, as I noted, by merely changing the standard uniform and issuing the Dress Blues rather than the Dress Greens. They could have still even modified the Blues slightly as they did.

Complete waste of time and money by going through so much all to settle on the Blues which we have always had.

Re: Army Dumping Green Service Uniform

Grey shirts with blue uniform jacket and trousers? How long will that last and how will it affect recruiting efforts? Sounds like what I wore as a security guard, to be frank! The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police used to wear that combination. The new field uniform was an improvement, but the new Class A, the jury is out on that one?

Well JohnK, The President and the Secretary of Defense decided that the change in uniform would be a lot easier to obtained than armored vehicles, flaq jackets and other equipment that a fighting soldier, sailor, marine Needs!  The president (bush) and the Secretary of Defense have been supporting The TOOPS FOR SIX Years now.
