Ralph Peters is a Fox News Strategic Analyst and contributor on matters military.  While being interviewed yesterday on the subject of Private Bowe Bergdahl he declared Bergdahl a "liar", a "deserter", and even suggested that the Taliban should just kill him.  Here's a report from conservative blog PoliticalFish, along with the video of the Peters interview:  http://www.thepoliticalfish.com/?p=578

Peters' statements are outrageous and beyond the pale.  No one knows what exactly happened when Bergdahl disappeared, nor does anyone truly know what was on his mind.  It's known that he apparently walked away from  his post after a shift with some Afghan soldiers, but after that it gets a little hazy.  I found one report that he had left a note that he was walking into the mountains "to find himself" and took some knives, but don't know if this is true.  Peters is making a lot of assumptions here and recklessly impugning this young soldier's character and motives without having all the facts.  We don't know what this young soldier's unit has been through, what he has been through, and what other factors might be at work.

What do you guys think?

Sir Thomas More: What would you do? Cut ... through the law to get after the Devil?
William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? ... [D]o you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

something about this entire thing just doesn't add up. i don't know what caused peters to say what he said but one would assume that he had something on this kid or he wouldn't have put his entire Career on the line.

You failed to mention that Ralph Peters is a former Lieutenant Colonel, but you clearly stated hes a Fox News analyst.

And what are you bitching about impugning without facts, you impugned that Major and his motives in his suit over obama without any facts...you dont get it both ways.

I disagree with the Lieutenant Colonel but it is his OPINION.  Maybe he knows something you dont? (actually he probably knows a lot you dont know)

Why don’t you Liberals idolize him and make Private Bowe Bergdahl a shining star of the left.  Elevate him to the status of a modern day Jane Fonda.

All I know is that if the PFC left of his own accord, then he truly is an idiot.  Sorry, but that's a simple fact.  Unfortunately, he'll probably pay for his idiocy with his life, and his death will probably be horrific and broadcasted around the world by the animals known as muslims.

I agree Crawfish.  The PFC is in a no win situation with the Muslim Barbarians.  They are going to treat him like Daniel Pearl.  He could die as a patriot martyr or die as a man without honor and a Liberal poster boy.

All of you are posting on this without knowing all the facts, as none of us know all the facts on this!  All of this conjecture on a missing, presumably captive soldier, and you all are bashing either the analyst, a former officer, or bashing the PFC.

I don't care which side of this you are posting on.  I am disgusted on this one.

Can we let this play out, until we know some facts, instead of going partisan on a POW?

  Sheesh!

Yes, yes, I know Peters is a retired Lieutenant Colonel.  For that matter I also know that his pen name is Owen Parry and he's the author of a pretty decent mystery series set in the Civil War.  I own all of them except "Rebels of Babylon" (my favorite of the series was "Call Each River Jordan").  However, my admiration for his fine historical novels doesn't mean I don't think he stepped way over the line with this one, particularly with his callous statements about letting the Taliban kill Bergdahl.  Frankly, I think he's lost his mind.  He's entitled to his opinion, but when he starts using his position as a paid commentator and analyst to promote a single-minded idea and condemning a young soldier without a hearing, without an explanation, without an opportunity to mount a defense, it is offensive and wrong and unjust.  That is MY opinion.

Must disagree with you about whether it's fair to bash Peters, Garry.  He's got a forum and the opportunity to speak, whereas this young soldier has no way to hear or respond to him.  It's not just that Peters is questioning Bergdahl, but that he has made up his mind without having all the facts and is trashing him as if there's nothing left to discuss.

Of course not.  That's because they're savages, while we are supposed to NOT be savages.  But go ahead, tell me why we should adopt THEIR standards instead of adhering to our own.  Sorry if you think I'm wrong to believe our way is better.

Oh I watched that interview with Ralph Peters on Fox News. I was some what shocked that he came down so hard on that young PFC...   I think he stated that the Army has the young PFC classified as a desertor? Not sure..  If thats the case, I am thinking there is probably some type of investigation taking place and the lawyers are tight lipped. Thinking that young man will be lucky to face the military legal community and do hope he gets released from a group of people who would just assume chop his head off publicly!  I will withhold judgement and hope for the best for this young PFC..  Mike

My opinion?
Follow Garry's advice to let go of this till there are enough facts before
making judgement calls. This holds true for all of us and should have
held true for anyone in the media.
Speculating is one thing, stating something is absolutely true is quite
another thing..

Ruth's our den mother, fraternity/sorority house mother, and gentle proponent of rules of good behavior.  I'm pretty sure she's had lots of experience with obstreperous children.  wink

Welcome to the site.  If you've had any experience in herding cats or getting all the ink back into bottles your skills might come in handy in the Current Events discussion forums (forae?).

A corpsman!  That explains the USMC avatar, but the USN signature.  Well, you'll see here that our many Marine members, no matter where on the political spectrum, have nothing but respect and affection for their corpsmen.  You'll get into a few scraps, but it's all good, clean fun.  It's how we keep people like Captain Kirk and SSgtMike off the streets and out of trouble lol

Thanks Marine Auntie..  The Marine Avatar is reflective of spending my entire career with the Fleet Marine Force. Embarking on a ship was as foriegn to me as it was to the Marines embarking along side me. As far as a few scrapes- well, I walk with a BN of Marines.. So its all in good fun!
Thanks,  Mike.
