Hi-Point Firearms

I was looking today for a new personal pistol for training. I saw a line of pistols from a company called Hi-Point. They had .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP pistol available. The prices were very low. Anyone have any experience with these weapons?

yes, I have a .380 auto and it is a very good pistol. I havent had any stops and it functions flawlessly. The down side is it only has a 10+1 capacity, its a little heavy and if your into how it looks, its not the prettiest. As far as accuracy at 30 yards its spot on. In my opinion its a good purchase to throw in a pack or keep at home for defense. And for the price you cant beat them.

I've got one of the .380 also and have shot the .40 and 9mm.  They are fairly accurate guns, butt ugly, but accurate.  I personally wouldn't use one for defense.  For that I stick with my 1911 at the house and for ccw I use a Makarov.  Put as a decent plinker you could do a lot worse that the Hi-Point.  Especially with the life time warrenty.

I've had experience with a few Hi-Point pistols, none of their rifles, but in all I have only seen 1 FTE and 1 FTF in the probably 1000 rounds I have seen other people shoot out of them and 500 rounds I've put through them. They are butt ugly, heavy, and I don't care for the sights but they work and are plenty accurate. A good buy for a very cheap gun, but if I was on a limited budget I would go with either a used S&W revolver like a Model 10 or 13 (fixed sight .38 and .357, respectively) or a used S&W auto like a 5906 or a newer Sigma, look for the Sigmas that end in VE i.e. the SW40VE and SW9VE. We had two of them in the police academy and they worked wonderfully for a pistol that cost $200.

Hi-Point is a great gun for the money.

I love mine.

I resently purchased a Hi-Point 9mm. I agree with the other posts......it's weird looking but accurate and dependable. I paid $145.00 new. Fobus makes a nice paddle holster for Hi-Points.

Carbines are OK.  Not great. Ruger made a better one.

Hi-Piont is a cheaply machined auto. Try looking into a Springfield XD, love mine!

Why do I instinctively believe the two posters that are basically calling the Hi-Point junk have never owned, fired, used one in their lives.

I own a LOT of guns and I have shot honestly thousands of them.  I don't own HPs because I can't afford better, honestly at a buck and a half for a good pistol I can't afford NOT to buy a few.

These guns are solid performers!  They are as accurate as most stock guns in similar calibers.  The sites are really nice and if you know how to shoot worth a d**n at all they are very good performers.  If you are a limp wristed sissy then any "blow back" pistol is just not for you no matter what the makers name is.

EVERY single person that calls these guns junk is nothing but a gun snob in my opinion.  Note how few people say I own one and don't like it, the haters all "don't own one and never will".  Hell that sounds nice and non bias oh and of course a reliable opinion based on fact.

If I had to grab one gun and go into a tactical situation would it be my C-9.  NO!  I would grab my 1911, it is a much better gun but my 1911 being better does not make the Hi-Point a POS.  The Hi-Point is a solid shooter and would be a good value at 250 let alone 150.  If I had a choice, Hi-Point or no sidearm at all, I would take the high point every time.

Modern Survival,

This is never going to end, one person's totally cool firearm could be another person's Junk or vica versa.  Sometimes opinion are well based some times, it based on nothing more than ego.

I have mentioned many times, it is not the firearm,  it is the shooter.

All depends on what you want, what you will use it for, etc.

There are a lot of firearms that are great bang for the buck.

I have seen several go out the door at the shop. Good deal for
the price, however I have not heard of anyone having one at the
CCW class.

Do you teach that course?

I won't tell you what I have carried for my CCW.

Maybe you should ask questions as to why someone doesnt like something, you might learn something that way.  Instead you come off sounding like someone from a Glock forum, spouting off without any understanding as to why someone does or doesnt like something.

I didnt call it junk, i just said you get what you pay for. Yes, I have owned one, I have shot one, it failed on me quite a few times. Would I rely on it? No. I thought the carbine was OK for a fun plinker. I also thought it was excessively bulky.

There are plenty of cheap guns out there that I dont knock. I would rather have a used Bersa, Makarov, Tokarev or CZ52 than a Hi-Point.  I was surprised by the Bersa Thunder .380s accuracy, I also bought a Makarov that I enjoy shooting and will even use as a carry gun.

Outside of the one you posted, I no longer own a CZ (really like).  I have Bersa in .380,  great carry gun.

I'm glad I came across this topic! I have been considering buying a Hi-Point .45. From what I have seen and heard it sounds like a pretty decent gun! Thanks for the input!

Vector,

Perhaps people that actually shoot these guns are tired of them being made out to be a POS by the uninformed.  By the way you were not one of the two I referred to.

BTW the Bersa 380 is a great CCW, I know several law enforcement officers that carry that gun off duty.

H.

I sold the Bersa back to its original owner when he got back from Iraq and in a not so good and expensive decision bought a PPK. Its fine and all I just liked the Bersa better.

I figured it was most likley Rob and I.  If I was being a snob though i would have told everyone to buy an overpriced H&K(if its expensive it has to be good!)
