National Call to Service

Eligibility

After you enlist in NCS, you must complete eight continuous years of military service in these three phases:

Phase 1

Complete basic training and job training , and then 15 months of active duty. Generally, this totals two years of service.

Phase 2

Complete one of these two options:

  • Reenlist in active duty for a period specified in the original enlisment agrrement.

  • Serve two years of active status in the Selected Reserve.

Phase 3

Complete enough time in one of these five options so that your total coninuous service equal eight years:

  • Active duty

  • Selective Reserve active status

  • Individual Ready Reserve

  • A national domestic service program, such as Americorps

  • Any approved combination of the above options

  • NCS benefits end on Dec. 31, 2007.

  • If you enlist under NCS, you are not eligible for the MGIB, unless you later reenlist for two or more additional years.
