This week the NFC version of Pats-Colts will be on display as the undisputed two best NFC teams, Green Bay and Dallas, meet in Irving, Texas, to in all likelihood determine who will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. I can’t wait until Sunday when I will no doubt be on the couch with a beer in one hand and the remote in the other as I prepare to watch two gunslingers lead their respective teams into battle.
…What’s that you say? The game is on Thursday? But it isn’t Thanksgiving. Oh well, middle-of-the-week football isn’t that bad if you don’t have to get up early for work the next day. I guess my couch and I have a date for Thursday.
…What’s that now? The game is only on NFL Network? It’s only available on DirecTV? Well that’s not going to work. DirecTV isn’t available in my area. Now I have to drive all the way to a crowded sports bar that hopefully has DirecTV, I will probably get suckered into dropping about 30 bucks if I spend the whole game at the bar, and won’t get back home until 12 only to have to wake up in six hours to go to work? No, thanks. I’m sure it’ll be a great game, but I’ll pass.
Odds are many of you casual football fans will find yourselves in the above position come Thursday. The Dallas-Green Bay football game can only be seen on the NFL Network, a channel that reaches only 35 million households. The NFL will tell you this is a result of the big, bad cable companies refusing to offer the NFL Network to its consumers. They want you to write, phone and petition your local cable provider to voice your anger at this egregious travesty. Don’t be fooled.
The blame for this lies solely with the NFL. The issue at dispute is that the NFL wants cable companies to pay them for their network at a certain level per customer, and then put the network on basic cable tiers where they can't pass on the cost to consumers. Cable companies want to offer the channel on different pay-tiers where you’d pay a certain extra fee a month to receive the channel, much like HBO or Showtime. Because the NFL could charge much higher advertising rates on a channel that is available to all cable subscribers than they could a channel only available to those who chose to subscribe to it, this standstill has occurred.
I, for one, am sick of fat-cat NFL executives and owners trying to line their pockets with the money of hard-working fans. With increasing ticket prices, and then factoring in the price of concessions and parking, the NFL has already priced the average NFL fan out of the game. They then ask the average taxpayer, many of whom don’t care about football, to pay for new, high-tech stadiums that most people never get to take advantage of in the first place. If by some chance a city’s voters don’t give into a new stadium proposal, they threaten to move the team.
I say it’s time for fans to stand up to the NFL and tell them that we don’t need their channel. Yes, we all like football, but do we really need to hear it talked about 24-hours a day, 365 days a year? Could the channel give me anything I can’t get from ESPN? I don’t need an increase in my cable bill so that I can watch a replay of a 1983 Rams-Steelers game. Furthermore, if we want fair, honest and objective sports information why would we turn into a channel that is owned by the very league it covers? That’s the definition of a conflict of interest.
So while NFL Executives want you to be angry with the cable companies for not being able to see Green Bay-Dallas, your outraged should be directed at the NFL. While Cable Company CEOs aren’t the most sympathetic of figures, Comcast CEO David Cohen gets to the root of the dispute:
“While the NFL claims that it wants its games to be seen by the widest possible audiences, it's actually their rules that limit which games fans can watch. … It's the NFL that decided to take these eight games off of free broadcast television and to try to enrich themselves at the expense of their fans by creating a multibillion dollar asset called the NFL Network."
So while you might be outraged at not being able to see the game, don’t give into the NFL. Perhaps if we as fans act as one the NFL will remember that it doesn’t exist because of the owners and executives of the teams, but because of the hard working, dedicated and passionate fans that support those teams.
On to the picks… (Home team in CAPS)
COWBOYS over Packers
Dallas, up to this point, has pretty much dominated every team it’s played with the exception of New England. Green Bay squeaked out several victories early but has come on as of late. When in doubt, I go with the better quarterback and the home team. Look, Favre has been rejuvenated this year and is doing things no one expected he would. However, he gets away with a lot of dangerous throws. I believe this game will come down to turnovers, and the Dallas defense has been very opportunistic in that department this season. Look for Ware and Ellis to get pressure off the edge and force Farve into some throws he shouldn’t make. Green Bay keeps it close in the first half, but Dallas takes over in the second to win by at least 10.
Chargers over CHIEFS
Herm Edwards is the worst game manager I’ve ever seen. How do you not kick a game-tying field goal on fourth down from the 20-yard line? I’m sick of people defending Herm. He’s indefensible. Get rid of him.
PANTHERS over 49ers
Jets over DOLPHINS
RAMS over Falcons
Look folks, its must-NOT-watch TV! Just when you thought the quality of play in the NFL couldn’t get any worse, last week happens. Lets see, we had a kicker miss a 32-yarder in OT and then his QB fumbled the ball in OT to lose. Apparently no one told the Broncos that Devin Hester is pretty good and you should probably stay away from him. Then you thought they would’ve learned that after he took the first one to the house. We had three teams get absolutely annihilated on Thanksgiving. Gus Ferrotte still can’t figure out how to take a snap after 14 years in the league (note: any more discussion of the Rams game will cause me to start throwing things uncontrollably). And then we had that shootout last night in Pittsburgh. But yea, sign me right up for the NFL network.
REDSKINS over Bills
Even after losing four fumbles in the first quarter Sunday the Redskins were still in position to win the game. Their defense didn’t allow a single first down in the second half. The defense will be playing with heavy hearts after Sean Taylor was shot in his home yesterday. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Sean. He was only 24.
TITANS over Texans
They’ll keep playing, I’ll keep pickin’ em. Come on boys, make me look good for once.
EAGLES over Seahawks
They almost beat the Pats, they should be able to take care of the team that SHOULD’VE lost to the Rams, right?
Bucs over SAINTS
Reggie Bush, can you please show be something? Anything? Too many times I have checked the book score only to find 12 carries for 25 yards and 8 catches for 38. That’s not gonna get it done, No. 2.
Jaguars over COLTS
David Garrard is the most slept-on QB. He still has yet to throw a pick. Colts simply have too many injuries to feel confident about picking. Losing Dwight Freeney kills their defense. Indy hasn’t played a great half in three and a half games. Until they do, I’m not picking them against a tough AFC contender.
Browns over CARDINALS
Ladies and Gentlemen, your AFC wildcard team. Tell me that doesn’t take you back.
Broncos over RAIDERS
Jay Cutler has been playing very nice as of late, showing up Vince in the battle of 2006 draft picks. My only concern is that the Broncos rush defense is pathetic, and Justin Fargas has been running well as of late. If only the Raiders had a young QB they could plug in to try to get acclimated to the league and perhaps steal a game…
Giants over BEARS
DO NOT KICK TO DEVIN HESTER.
STEELERS over Bengals
That field last night was horrible, but still you’ve got to be able to score more than three points on the lowly Dolphins. This might be a trap game for the Steelers but Cincy’s defense is just so lousy it won’t allow them to stay close.
Patriots over RAVENS
Only seven more left…

Everyone knows that the winner of Thursday night's game between Dallas and Green Bay will be meeting the Patriots in the super bowl. So for that reason only, I will be heading down to the Winners Circle in Salisbury, Mass. to watch the game on one of their 60+ TV's.
I noticed that some messages of last week were full of whiners about the Pats, where some still think they'll be losing a game this year. After Monday night's whipping of Baltimore...in Baltimore--the Pats will be 12-0. Then the Pats have Pitts at home, Jets at home, Dolphins at home, and then the Giants on the road for their last game.
Could at least one of you football afficiandoes please predict which game of the Pats schedule they will lose. C-mon, predictions please---we are in desperate need for some humor here. Calling on Griff--front and center!

I subscribe to the HD channels for my TV, and I get the NFL Network. It's really not all that great, except that you can watch any of the games you missed because they replay the whole previous weekend the following week. When it's not football season however - boooo. My living room will become the local sports bar on Thurs though: BYOB, suckas.
All of the critics seem to think that the Steelers are the only team who has a chance at beating the Pats. I say no. The reason the Eagles did so well was because of the expert play-calling of Andy Reid & Co, and a pass rush that did not allow Tom Brady the time to stop and check his e-mail while selecting the receiver he wanted to pass to. And while the Pittsburg D can apply the pressure, Mike Tomlin isn't there yet (although he's having a hell of a first season).
So who WILL beat the Pats?? When everyone seems to be in agreement that they will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, the question becomes: Who cares...? (I do hope they lose though)
Go Packers!! It's really inspiring to see Brett Favre doing so well. Green Bay has some mean CBs = Romo INTs?? I hope so.
I assert that the Redskins beat the Redskins last weekend, not the Bucs. I really like Jeff Garcia, though, I hope he's ok.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.
Go Redskins!!

ptsd, I don't know which one, but one of those teams will beat you. Could be the Giants who will have to win to get in. Could be the Ravens or the Steelers. Listen dude, you shouldn't have beaten the Eagles. And they are one of the bottom feeders in the NFC. You were exposed. The world saw that Brady is nothing without Moss and your defense is not that good. YOU COULDN'T STOP AJ FEELEY!!!!!!! You want comedy football fans, keep listening to this joker who started watching football 3 years ago.
Listen, a thought occured to me tonight on the way home.
In almost every Power Ranking by every sports channel, there is a trend.
1. 2 of the top 3 teams in the league are in what conference? That's right, the supposedly inferior NFC. (Dallas and Green Bay)
2. 2 of the bottom 3 teams in the league are in what conference? That's right, the supposedly superior AFC. (NY Jets and Miami)
3. Let's take this one step further. The Jets and Miami make up an astonishing 25% of the supposedly unbeatable Patriots super soft schedule. Of course you're gonna win, you play 4 freakin games against the 2 worst teams in the league!
4. NE has only played 2 teams all year with a winning record. Now some of them have a winning record today, but when the Patsies got a hold of them, they sucked. The Cowboys and Colts were the exceptions. And these 2 teams held a lead in the 4th quarter.
Listen, don't be intimidated by the Patsies. Someone in the NFC East will knock these guys off. I only hope the G-Men let the 'Boys do it in the SuperBowl.

griff,
ptsdkid wants to arm wrestle me and he can't get over the fact that I am a Colts fan. BTW kid, I would put a hurtin' on you. Over 50 boxing champ or not. LMAO Also I like boys so even when I whoop your Boston Bean butt, you can't blame it on anything other than I am a tough and powerful woman who knows some combatives!!! I would use your weight against you.
Now back to the subject at hand. I do not make it a big secret that I do not like the PATS. Mostly because you love them. LMAO!!! I do pick them every week to my chargin though as I am all about the rankings at this point. They are just a pawn in this game of mine!
I DO NOT care if you mock my COLTS. Be my guest.
kid, you come off sounding hostile and angry. Not us. You love to turn it around but griff will take care of you. LOL
Now I will respond to the fact that you called me Doll and so did Clovis. Clovis is sincere and when you call me that, you sound patronizing AND belittling. Not sure if that is how you mean it but that is how it sounds in the context in which it is said. I don't expect you to understand what I am saying but I am sure there are others who would.

****Tell me Julie, since you said you pick the Pats to win each week (which is very wise to do), did you also pick them to win against your beloved Colts? Don't lie now.
I DO NOT care if you mock my COLTS. Be my guest.kid, you come off sounding hostile and angry. Not us. You love to turn it around but griff will take care of you. LOL
****Hostile and angry? Hardly, I'm enjoying ribbing you and Griff.

****Evidently you're not the only one believing my calling you doll is of a sincere gesture. I just received a private e-mail warning from the administrator that several wussies over on the political forum submitted complaints that I was being too harsh on you. LOL! I guess calling you doll is wussie speak for calling you something derogartory in their minds. Perhaps my challenge to you to arm wrestle was misinterpreted by the wussie contingent there as my being a bully. LOL!
julie
ps: Griff continues to humor us all by saying the Pats have an easy powder puff schedule this year. I believe the Pats had either the toughest or next to toughest schedule this year.
Here are some of the teams the Pats play this year:
San Diego, Cleveland, Dallas, Washington, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburg, and the Giants, and they play Buffalo twice while having a winning record.

In that you can’t take a hint if it hit you across your forehead with a 2X4. I will spell it out for you.
You are not funny. You are not cute. Most if not all of your remarks are crude, ignorant condescending, far from being sexy, stupid and just not funny.
In fact you are very boring to say the least.
Now I don’t know where you are from and don’t know where you live and I do not want to know. But my guess is somewhere in the North East. Been there, lived there and most of the people I met there were normal human beings. But I also met your kind when I lived there. Does the shoe fit? Do you look down your nose at everyone as the Kennedy's have done. No? You sure sound and act like one.
Being that you haven’t noticed. You have not picked many friends on this site. Did you ever wonder why?

**** My first girlfriend thought I was the cutest and sexiest boy in our second grade class. Of course, she didn't have much to choose from since one of the three boys in class was obese, and the other one was a mamma's boy, that left me the distinction of being the youngest lover boy of that particular 1956 class.
In fact you are very boring to say the least.
**** Boring enough to get you to respond, yet not bored enough to wait and see your first exciting post to this forum. I'm a patient man.
Now I don’t know where you are from and don’t know where you live and I do not want to know. But my guess is somewhere in the North East. **** Good, then I won't tell you where I live. You did say that most people living in the Northeast were normal human beings, and that you also met my kind when you lived there. Then your question to me was does the shoe fit? Why yes it does fit rather nicely...thanks for asking. No, I do not look down my nose at everyone, for having a huge Roman hook nose as I have, makes it nearly impossible to do so. If you were to read my political posts (over where there are more intelligent postings then say here) as in the political section, then you would see that I am further to the right than Attila the Hun himself, and that I make it a habit to expose the damagaing ideologies of people like Ted Kennedy. We in New England are still waiting for Teddy boy to give us the complete skinny on his manslaughter cover-up of the Mary Jo Kopechne case of 1969.
Being that you haven’t noticed. You have not picked many friends on this site. Did you ever wonder why?

****Glad to see that you also noticed that Allons didn't mention any sports topic with his attack on me. I was ready to report him to the administrator, but my cooler head prevailed. Btw, I did just post a new topic over on the political forum, and unlike Allons...I managed to stay on topic for that designated forum. Nice detective work, Charlie. ptsdkid,
oOoOoO You are such a trouble maker. You can't report anyone to the administrator without incriminating yourself. I know you are reading your own posts through rose colored glasses but there are a few things that many could take as a personal insult. Never mind that this is an NFL site. I will say what I have to say to you once again on this site. I am sure the others will indulge me for a moment. I am sure you love to hear yourself talk even more.
You are like an arsonist. You take the fuel and the matches, start the fire and blame the wind on the fact that the fire got out of hand. AND you also stay and watch it burn just for the fun of it. So YOU are the catalyst in all of the disagreements.Even though you claim to be a Republican. You do not own your own behavior. You blame others for all the things you do. You are only responding in self defense. Never mind that you set it all in motion. Whatever. You are beyond help at this point. Good luck. At least there is something in your life that is a winner. The PATRIOTS! And least you have them to cling to. Good luck with that hollow victory.

ptsdkid,
oOoOoO You are such a trouble maker.
GO COLTS!!! GO RAMS!!! AND WHATEVER PTSDKID!!!

****Sorry Julie, couldn't follow you with this latest nonsensical blather. But I see where you did mention the Patriots on this sports forum. Good for you. Who knows, perhaps you'll come around yet to watching and rooting for the greatest football team of all time. That being the Patriots of course. LOL!

pstd,
You are a fool. Lets just leave it at that. You have some personal issues that I can't help you with. I am not blathering but that is your response when you have nothing of relevance to say.
GO COLTS!!! GO RAM!!! AND THE PATTIES WILL LOSE VERY SOON!!!
Be Strong, drive on and don't get in my way!

**** Shouldn't you be working or something? The ironic thing here is that your continued blather here is of no relevance whatsoever to this being a sports forum.
If this relevance you speak of is in any way related to personal issues, I suggest you look into that PTSD 101 forum that I so generously offered up to you.
Now I suggest you meet me over on the PTSD 101 forum before I report you to the administration for harrassment and slander of my good name. LOL!

Today is my day off pstdkid as I work every Saturday. What are you doing? I just got in from the gym and will be heading out again. So I am very busy.
I am done with you. You are not worth my time. You are a trouble maker who gives those who truly suffer from PTSD a bad name. You had problems before you aquired PTSD and no I will not take your bait. YOU ARE DONE.
Be Strong, drive on and don't get in my way!

****I'm banking on your support Charlie, to help me re-establish that good name I once had here. I had been under the impression that Julie was this extra strong woman and that nothing was going to phase her. Evidently she couldn't handle my constantly calling her doll, for she says she is done with me. My heart is nearly broken. I will keep posting (especially after every Patriot win, including the super bowl), but it sure would help make it more fun if you promise to talk to me on ocassion as friend might do.

Hey Griff,
Big night of football with your Cowgirls going up against the pack. As you are well aware, tonight's winner will most likely have home field advantage in the playoffs. What that means is the home team will be representing the NFC in the super bowl against the Patriots. So I'm kinda torn on who I would want to win tonight. You see if the Cowgirls win--that would give you and me something to look forward to since the Pats already beat up on the C-girls earlier this year. But I wouldn't be depressed if the Pats were to play the Pack in the bowl game either. Remember, Favre and the pack beat the Pats in a previous super bowl when the Pats were much less talented. So I could live with a pay back game as well against the upstart pack.
I'll be traveling to the 60+ TV sports bar to watch the game since its only getting televised on the NFL network. Still get to watch the Bruins and Celtics on side by side TV sets. You gotta understand, viewing our sport dynasties up here in God's country is a religion in itself. The bar also has a huge supply of scratch tickets, lotto tickets, pull tabs, and KENO to help feed our gambling fever. Life is great!

This is a football forum. Keep the discussion centered on the topic. Talking trash on other teams is part of being a fan. Do not take said attacks on other teams as an indictment on you personally. The first 3 posts to this topic are on point and healthy football-related debate. The others are not. Please keep the non-football related bickering to a minimum. This will help foster a more healthy discussion.
