What. A. Game. Whodathunk that the Ravens would be the ones to give the Pats their first “real" scare of the year? The whole experience was surreal. Former 1972 Dolphins Bob Griese and Mercury Morris got the hype going before the game. You really could feel just how much their undefeated season means to those guys hearing them talk before the game. Some will say they come off as arrogant and self-important; the way they go about celebrating each year once the last undefeated team loses. I’ve said the same in the past. But now, with an undefeated Pats season well within reach, I’ve done a 180. In an era where it seems no record is safe, where accusations of cheating and steroids litter the sporting landscape, being able to say they were the only ones who accomplished something no one else did, well that’s special. And they shouldn’t have to apologize for not being enthusiastic, or even accepting, of teams that threaten to tie their accomplishment. All the talk before the game was of the Pats joining the Dolphins in the ranks of the unbeaten, the all-time best. But what about the game right in front of them? It appeared to be a forgone conclusion that the Pats would win. And for 59 minutes and 10 seconds, the world was shocked.

Should we have seen this coming? Possibly. In Baltimore, on a night in which winds were gusting up to 30 mph, you got the feeling something special might be in the cards for the Ravens. Then, before the opening kickoff, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Willis McGahee huddled together on the sidelines. All three attended the University of Miami, the same school recently deceased Redskins safety Sean Taylor had attended. Reed and McGahee had been teammates of Taylor. The all-world linebacker gave an impassioned speech that ESPNs cameras were able to capture. I had goose bumps. I wanted to go out there and give my all for the young man. I can only imagine the intensity that must have been flowing through the veins of those Ravens players.

And that’s the way the entire Baltimore team played, the entire game. The defense was flying to the ball and punishing the Pats receivers. On a cold night, where getting hit hurts all that much more, it seemed like some of the Pats receivers got alligator arms. There were drops left and right, even by the almighty Moss. Brady was consistently pressured. The offensive line that people were so quick to anoint as one of the best in the league suddenly looked very slow. Willis McGahee ran the ball like a man possessed and, at least for one night, offensive genius realized that he should probably get his all-Pro running back the ball. Kyle Boller played unconscious, until his late interception near the goal line on a possession where a field goal might’ve put the game out of reach.

The Ravens were SO close to pulling it off, the upset of the century, from 20-point dogs to glorious victors. But then they self-imploded. First, the timeout on fourth down that seemingly ripped the life from the Ravens defense. Then Brady’s scramble. Then, another fourth down. Brady’s pass falls incomplete, but a flag. Holding. You simply can’t give Brady and the Pats that many opportunities. Brady then hit Gaffney in the end zone for the win, and more importantly, the over. Then the Bart Scott meltdown and the rest is history.

After the game, I felt as though I had just played four quarters. What a roller coaster of a game, of emotion. As I sat there, stunned by the fact that the Patriots were somehow able to pull it out, I wondered if the Pats had now becoming mortal again or if they had just dodged that one game they should’ve lost; the game that all the other previously unbeaten teams have fell victim to, the game that causes the haughty ’72 Dolphins to pop champagne. To be honest, I don’t know. But if the Pats were going to lose, last night was the perfect storm. There was the once proud, dominant defense that had be relegated to an after thought. The swirling, high velocity winds that caused the Pats potent aerial attack problems. The Ravens three pro bowlers were all dedicating the game to their fallen comrade. And the Pats were possibly looking forward to their upcoming matchup with the Steelers. And yet, the Pats somehow found a way to win.

If they do end up going undefeated, this was the game that allowed them to put their names in the record books. But it’s not going to be easy from here on out. Each team is going to be looking at the Pats game as their Super Bowl. A slip up, as we’ve now seen, can come at anytime.

In the words of Dolphins running back Mercury Morris: “Don’t talk to me when you’re in my area code, talk to me when you’re on my block."

On to the picks… (Home Team in CAPS)

A little something different this week. I’ll make my picks like usual, but instead of telling you why the team I picked will win, I’ll tell you why they’ll lose. Then next week I’ll have to decide which one of me to listen to. Plus, my picks can’t get any worse recently. So don’t listen to me. Take the other team.

Bears over REDSKINS
Why they lose: Jason Campbell has all the time in the world to drop back. Grossman turns into, well, Grossman and turns the ball over at least twice. Portis runs over a beat up Bears defense. Devin Hester is not a factor in the return game.

Bucs over TEXANS
Why they lose: Luke McCown realizes that he’s a McCown. Earnest Graham can’t get going on the ground. Mario Williams pressures McCown into arrant throws and bad decisions.

BILLS over Dolphins
Why they lose: God is merciful and ends the curse of Satan Saban.

BENGALS over Rams
Why they lose: Bulger plays and shreds the Bengals secondary. Steven Jackson runs over the d-line. Carson Palmer, TJ, and Chad Johnson all get injured attempting one of the most elaborate endzone celebrations of all time, even though they’ve just scored to tie the game on their opening possession.

Giants over EAGLES
Why they lose: Eli Manning.

PACKERS over Raiders
Why they lose: Brett Favre throws multiple picks. Justin Fargas and the Raiders running game control the clock. It snows and the field conditions look like Dolpins-Steelers.

TITANS over Chargers
Why they lose: Vince Young turns the ball over. The Titans running game can’t get going. Philip Rivers remembers he’s supposed to be good. Albert Hanysworth’s presence doesn’t resurrect the Titans run defense.

PATRIOTS over Steelers
Why they lose: Pittsburgh runs all over them, keeping Brady on the sidelines. The Pats running game can’t get anything going. Brady is constantly pressured and knocked down. The cold weather causes many dropped balls. Randy Moss gets flagged for crucial pass interference calls. Karma for getting past the Ravens in a game they shouldn’t have won.

Cowboys over LIONS
Why they lose: Tony Romo gets hurt.

JAGUARS over Panthers
Why they lose: Vinny T harnesses his Miami days. The Carolina pass rush forces Garrard to make bad decsisions. They are able to control clock with a combination of short passes and the running game, limiting Jacksonville’s possessions. They return an INT or kickoff for a TD.

SEAHAWKS over Cardinals
Why they lose: Kurt Warner has time to pick apart the Seattle defense. Boldin and Fitzgerald make big plays in the passing game. Edge has a big day against a Seattle team that hasn’t beat anyone good.

Vikings over NINERS
Why they lose: San Francisco shuts down the Viking running game, forcing Tavaris Jackson to throw. Trent Dilfer doesn’t turn the ball over and Frank Gore runs wild in front of the home crowd.

Browns over JETS
Why they lose: The Jets play well at home, and the weather helps them out, making it difficult for Anderson to throw it. Cleveland is forced to rely on its felon running back who is no longer a real threat. The Jets get consistent pressure on Anderson, as they did with Big Ben.

BRONCOS over Chiefs
Why they lose: Their running game can’t get going, Jay Cutler plays like a 2nd year quarterback, and Herm Edwards doesn’t mismanage the clock.

Colts over RAVENS
Why they lose: Ravens play with the same passion they did against the Pats.

Saints over FALCONS
Why they lose: The Falcons unleash the dogs.

Steven,

You are right. I will stop responding. But I do have one more thing to say to him.

ptsd,

Let me quote you: "Besides, Matt Ryan became the ACC player of the year while he awaits to receive his Heisman Trophy to put the icing on the cake."

How is he going to do that "football genius" when he ISN'T EVEN A FINALIST!!!!!!!!!  Awesome!!!!! You have once again shown how ignorant you are about this sport.

Just a quick note to let all know that I have not died.  The Steelers will have the best game of the year and will beat the Pats by 2 TD's.  This is great and bad all at the same time.  Great - because we can put the Pats to rest, and I'm a Stellers fan.  Bad - I have Moss and Brady on my fansty team and I need a great performance from both.  But if it will end all the perfect season talk, then I will gladly lose the game for the better of the blog.

Good luck all!!!

Though it pains me just a little that Matt Ryan's team the BC Eagles folded under the pressure, and that Ryan will not get the deserved recognition for the Heisman because of the team's flop--the fact remains that he is still the best quarterback in college football today, with Tebow of Florida coming in a close second.

Now, on to the Patriot's drive to remain undefeated. I'll be honest, the biggest reason I want to see the Pat's go undefeated, is to watch Mercury Morris and Don Schula grovel in pain with the prospect of their 1972 Dolphin perfect season go down in flames. I can't stand Schula for many reasons, but mostly because the Patriot/Dolphin grudge matches of the past when we Patriot fans proudly wore our 'Squish the Fish' football jerseys to the game. We took tailgating to the highest level imaginable. A perfect season will also help my Patriot stock to rise.

I don't usually predict scores, so I won't this week as well. However, bet the house on the Patriots to beat the Steelers. Belicheck won't allow the boys to have 3 sub par performances in a row, that's a given!

Is Belicheck going to take a few snaps in this game?  I understand your point, but does the coach do little more than call the play and expect the player to perform?  When you can't excute against Eagles or Ravens D, then what makes you think you will do any better against the Steelers?  I understand that the Steelers might not be the offense giant that the Ravens are, but maybe Big Ben can find a hole or two!!!

Lets be honest with ourselves, if the Ravens had a good coach the Pats would have a loss already.  They changed the game plan in the 4th quarter and played not to lose, then they lost.  It is the oldest story in the book, prevent D kills you and killing the clock on O is just as bad.  That is why I had no problem with the Pats playing the entire game and beating people by 30+ points, keep doing what got you there.  If the Ravens whould have taken a page from the Pats play book, the undefeated season would be over.  End of subject!!!!  big_smile

**** He does a lot more than just call certain plays. You would need to listen to some of the Patriot players (as I do on the sports shows here in New England) to get a full appreciation of why Belichick's coaching style pays dividends.

When you can't excute against Eagles or Ravens D, then what makes you think you will do any better against the Steelers?  I understand that the Steelers might not be the offense giant that the Ravens are, but maybe Big Ben can find a hole or two!!!

**** What do you mean when they can't execute against the Eagles and Ravens D? Seems to me that Brady & Co did just fine in the last quarter of each game to secure the win. Maybe Big Ben will find a hole ot two, but what matters most is the final score.

**** If only, if only! That is the reason why Belicheck and the Patriots win....its their coaching staff. It wasn't just that the Ravens and Eagles changed their game plan late in the game, rather, it was that the Patriot defense came up big late in the game--allowing Brady to spin his magic.

That is why I had no problem with the Pats playing the entire game and beating people by 30+ points, keep doing what got you there.  If the Ravens whould have taken a page from the Pats play book, the undefeated season would be over.  End of subject!!!!  big_smile

**** If only...if only! If only these other teams had the talent of a Brady, and the talent of Belicheck the coach--then perhaps your team could go undefeated as well. How bout that for end of subject?

ptsdkid,

I gave the Pats their prop's.  They have done great for 13 weeks, just wanted to put you on notice -- IT IS OVER!!!  You will be singing the what if song next week.  Then we will truely have the "end of the subject".

The truth is that going undefeated is just a carrot.  The real reason they play the game is to get to and win the superbowl.  Last time I checked you don't have to be undefeated to do that, just win the last few when it counts the most.

If the Steelers lose, I will be the first to say I was wrong.  But until the game is played I can crow all I want about what I feel they will do to the Pats.  Just don't hide when the truth is revealed to you on Sunday.  Enjoy the game, I know I will.smile

**** What is so amazing about the Patriots is that each team they play are bringing their A-game to the table, because as announcers have said, there is almost as much praise for the team that beats an undefeated team, as is the glory in going undefeated. The Patriots don't haved the luxury of slacking off for any game in order to keep the streak alive. Though they did have 2 sub par games, and the Steelers look to be getting their act together as of late (aside from that last minute win over the winless Dolphins, lol)--you'll get to see first hand on Sunday why the Patriots have this dynasty intact.

Charlie,

You are right, I might need Julie's luck coin.  Been drinking to much of the "Kool-Aid" lately, I keep thinking that the Dolphins have a chnace to win one somewhere.  Picked them the last two weeks, but not this week, I think they get killed.  Bought in on the Bears last night as well.  I can almost see the TV from hear, but if I don't quit screwing around I'll be stuck watching my old 13" B&W for a long time. LOL.

Stompdog,

The news of the day for the Boys is as follows.....

Enjoy it while you can, because soon and very soon it will be over!!
The Boys had a great run and will make the playoffs just to get beat in their first game.  They are just a few players away from being really good.  But I must agree with Steven, they have outstanding cheerleaders.  On that subject I will give them a A++.  Enjoy the game and don't be surprised if the Boys are caught looking ahead to next week when they play the Eagles.  They will probably win, but I don't see the cover of 11+ points.

See you back here Sunday night.

*** Same to you and the Steelers, sbt. Was it you that said an 11 point spread or so was too much? Anyway, I have to agree. The Steeler defense has always been tough on the Pats. Please let me know ahead of time if the network plans on having Mercury Morris and Don Schula there as guests. I get my jollies off by watching those two braggadocios peeing their pants with every Pat score. LOL!
Looks like its a 4PM game. Wonder if the entire nation gets to see it.

Come on the Finz have to win this one! This is it or my name is not Joe. I am probably the only true fan left, or right.
I'm miserable. At least the Orlando Magic are something to watch!

The Pats and Boys in the Superbowl, that will be OK, at least everyone will watch it, just don't let it be a dud like last year.

It's too early you say...nah that's what it will be that's why it will be so boring the rest of the way. not unless the dolphins, opps!sorry
I mean Green Bay take a big lift off of the Boys shoulders.
I need New England to lose on and the Fins to win one and I'll be a happy fin fan.

Check out what one of the nation's leading liberal rags has to say:

Don Shula's appearance in the "Monday Night Football" booth in Baltimore was embarrassing in the extreme. Shula was openly rooting against the Pats, at one point slapping broadcaster Tony Kornheiser on the back after the Ravens scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to go up by seven points. Talk about graceless and classless. -- Boston Herald

NEWSFLASH MORONS!!!!! Don Shula is employed by no one. Hence he has no obligation to remain unbiased. He is a football fan and the coach of the only undefeated team in NFL history. He is allowed to cheer for whoever he wants. Get over your elitist attitude and look in the mirror to see graceless and classless. Or you could just look at your head coach.
