Special Programs

Supporting the needs of a disabled veteran can be financially taxing. Fortunately, there are organizations that offer financial, vocational and rehabilitative services for veterans free of charge. Meet the challenges of adjusting to your husband's new status with help from the following organizations:

Paw for Patriots Program

Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. runs a seeing-eye dog placement and training program for veterans who have been blinded during their service in Operation Iraq Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Dogs and training are free of charge to the veteran. For more information, visit their Obtaining a Guide Dog page. To apply, fill out the online application.

The Injured Soldier Foundation

The Injured Soldier Foundation aids in the physical and mental rehabilitation of wounded servicemembers by taking them on outdoor recreational trips. Participation in a hunting or fishing trip is free to the soldier. For more information, email Tony Covell, Executive Director, or call 231-362-2993.

Disabled American Veterans

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) offers several programs to help wounded servicemembers get back on their feet. Aid includes transitional and outreach programs, disaster relief and claim representation. For more information, contact the DAV office in your state. Coalition to Support America's Heroes

The Coalition to Support America's Heroes is a non-profit organization that aids servicemembers wounded in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. They offer the following programs:

• Emergency Aid—Offers cash grants to wounded servicemembers and their families so that they can pay for groceries, medical bills, utility bills, mortgage, rent, and loan payments, and more.
• Family Support Network—Enables families to travel to military hospitals to be close to their recovering servicemember. The network provides traveling families free lodging and reduced-priced meals and airfare during their stay.
• Homes for Heroes—Provides new or renovated housing to veterans who require handicap accessibility. The homes are provided at little or no cost to the servicemember.
