AKO

AKO is the World's largest and the United States Army's main corporate intranet. As of 2001, all active duty, reserves, and National Guard soldiers and all Department of Army civilians are required to have an account with Army Knowledge Online. AKO is currently serving over 1.8 million users. This web portal provides secure access of more than 300 services to Army Soldiers, employees, retirees, and families across the world. AKO has been highly successful in implementing mobile Army users with non-transient email addresses and raising the bar on planning for disaster recovery.

There most important functions of Army Knowledge Online are:

E-mail. This function is the most important because it allows for a more time efficient way of passing information through the chain of commands.

Record storage. This feature eliminated the use of paper files and allows soldier's to access their personal records at their convenience. To look up your files on AKO visit iPERMS.

Other functions include training (which allows soldiers and Department of Army citizens to further their education with no extra charge), finance, medical, travel, benefits forms, and readiness all contribute to making the Army more efficient.
